The First Few Weeks:

Rethinking Math Course Design for Success

Watch the Recording

With more students needing math remediation than ever before and lacking academic success skills like persistence and patience, something had to change at Seminole State College!

The traditional course design for all four general education math pathways was failing many students. So, the math instructors have taken a different approach to the first few weeks of the semester by integrating Hawkes Strategies for Academic Success Skills, Hawkes Integrated Review Lessons, and Hawkes Math at Work projects into each pathway and corequisite course. Attend to hear more about how a simple course schedule redesign has transformed math education at SSC!

Last year, we had the pleasure of interviewing Professor Carpenter to uncover the roots of her passion for education and the wisdom she's gained along the way.
