Five Simple Ways to Integrate Hawkes into a Mathematics Course

Watch the Recording

Join Dr. Blazek and Mrs. Lindsay for an overview of different ways to integrate Hawkes into a college-level mathematics course, whether it be in-person or online, developmental or core requirement.

The five different methods of integrations include:

1. Use PowerPoint slides as the basis for lecture presentation
2. Use “Learn” as a pre-class assignment
3. Use “Practice” as in-class examples that students work while the professor guides
4. Use “Certify” as an out-of-class homework assignment
5. Use a WebTest for an in-class or online course test assignment

Discover how each of these five aspects have been delivered in the classroom and how it was received by students at Louisiana Christian University.

Elizabeth Lindsay,

Louisiana Christian University

Dr. Blazek serves as the coordinator for the Mathematics department at Louisiana Christian University. Her graduate studies were completed at Louisiana Tech University where she earned a Masters in Mathematics and Statistics and her Ph.D. in Computational Analysis and Modeling. Dr. Blazek has taught a variety of courses ranging from Intermediate Algebra to Numerical Analysis along with computer science courses. Her research interests consist of using statistics and mathematical modeling to discover trends in areas such as graduation rates and course passing rates.

Elizabeth Lindsay is a 1979 graduate of Louisiana Christian University where she was a member of the honor society, Phi Delta Kappa. Mrs. Lindsay has pursued advanced graduate classes through Northwestern State University, Louisiana Tech University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. After college graduation Mrs. Lindsay taught math and speech in Rapides Parish Schools for twenty-one years. Upon retirement from Tioga High School, Mrs. Lindsay continued her career in education by teaching math and speech at Grace Christian School for twelve years, retiring in 2012. In 2013, Mrs. Lindsay joined Louisiana Christian University as an adjunct instructor of Intermediate Algebra in the LCU Bridge Program. She became a full-time instructor in the LCU Bridge program in 2020. Mrs. Lindsay specializes in teaching math using cooperative learning and hands-on materials developed through her experience and research. She has been a member of the Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
